Bridging the Gap: Integrating Sales and Marketing for Accounting Firm Success

I recently had the pleasure of facilitating the AAM High! Webinar for May on the topic of integrating sales and marketing for accounting firm success.

In this discussion, Rehmann Chief Marketing Officer Holly Shier and Director of Sales Nicole Burgeson unpacked how integrating sales and marketing isn’t just a best practice, it’s a growth strategy. Their insights offered a clear roadmap for accounting firms ready to break down silos and drive smarter, more unified business development efforts.

69% of attendees said they were part of a marketing team of less than 5 people and protecting others’ time brings value to our overall relationship. Having a small team means you can’t do it all, but you have to find the balance between what your responsibilities are and what the responsibilities are for your other teams. So, this is where the marketing and business development teams need to align goals and learn how they work best to drive the firm forward, together. Having that extra role clarity to show each team what they should be working on helps!

Best Practices for Communication

Nicole emphasized that effective communication between sales and marketing must go beyond ad hoc updates. “Shared language is critical,” particularly when defining qualified leads or success metrics. Weekly check-ins, centralized data in CRMs, and transparent campaign updates are all part of Rehmann’s approach to maintaining clarity and accountability. Holly added that consistent communication reduces misalignment and builds mutual respect. This helps build a crucial foundation when the two functions are aiming at the same growth targets.

The Importance of Sales Enablement

Sales enablement, as Holly described it, is about empowering the sales team with more than just pitch decks. “Marketing’s job is to create strategies and materials that sales can use—not just admire,” she said. Nicole detailed how her team uses marketing-created content like email campaigns and webinars as strategic entry points to start client conversations. Together, they build resources based on real-time sales feedback, ensuring tools are relevant and immediately applicable. They also use CRMs and feedback loops to identify friction points and tailor their support accordingly.

Leadership Buy-In

“Without buy-in from the top, alignment efforts stall.” Holly mentioned your accounting firm leadership involvement goes beyond approving budgets. Firm leaders engage in strategy discussions, understand marketing KPIs, and champion integration across departments. This top-down commitment helps marketing and sales stay focused on the big picture: driving sustainable, client-centered growth.

How Collaboration Creates Growth

One of the most powerful messages came from Nicole: “We grow faster when we collaborate intentionally.” She illustrated how marketing’s role in lead generation and sales’ role in relationship-building are not separate stages but part of one continuous journey. By aligning tools like HubSpot and Clearview Social, and sharing goals firm-wide, Rehmann creates visibility and momentum. Holly also highlighted the importance of letting go of traditional turf boundaries—encouraging both teams to step into shared ownership of outcomes.

The Tools Behind the Strategy

Here are some of the tools their team relies on to support integration between the marketing and business development teams:

  • HubSpot for automation and campaign organization
  • Clearview Social to streamline content sharing
  • Jasper for individualized content creation
  • CRM platforms (like their custom system now managed by IT) for unified tracking and analytics

Of course, these tools aren’t used in isolation—they’re part of a larger ecosystem designed to foster data-driven collaboration.

Overall, this AAM High! Webinar was really insightful. You can watch the recording here. Members can get the recording free with their membership.

We also have another webinar coming up that you may be interested in. Join us Wednesday, May 21 at 2 pm EST for our next Virtual Campfire topic: Building Firm Advocates at Every Level.

So, where do you start? Making collaboration work is a habit that you can build into your process over time.

Practical advice: start small. Pick one initiative where marketing and sales can collaborate—like a webinar follow-up campaign—and track results together. Over time, these wins build trust and open the door to more integrated strategies.
