Unlocking Value: Should Your Accounting Firm Gate Its Content?

Accounting firms use content marketing to showcase expertise, build trust and attract new clients. But with so much valuable content available online, firms face a strategic question: when does it make sense to gate content behind a form or login?

Gated Content: Lead Generation

Gating content requires users to provide information in exchange for access to valuable content like an eBook, webinar, white paper or template. It can add a sense of exclusivity or premium value through thought leadership pieces or detailed industry-specific insights. This can be a powerful tool for lead generation if your firm’s goals are to build a list of prospects, especially for niche services. Collecting contact information allows firms to nurture leads with relevant content over time. It enhances the ability to map content to stages on the prospect’ buying cycle as well as opportunities to learn about the prospect.

To determine if you should gate your content, its important to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What are the goals for the content? – Do you want to generate leads or educate prospects? Gating content is all about generating leaders while ungated content informs prospects about your firm’s services.
  2. What is the value of the content? – The information needs to be valuable enough to the target audience that they will fill out the form or sign up for email list to the view content. If your competitors are offering this information for free, re consider putting your firm at a disadvantage for gating the content.

Ungated Content: Visibility

One of the main reasons to not gate content is visibility. Fewer people will access gated content because some prospects will not bother filling out a form. Ungated content is free to everyone who comes to your website which means it will receive more views than gated content. It also has search engine optimization (SEO) value unlike gated content. Search engines cannot index gated content, so it does not help with your firm’s organic search visibility. Ungated content also builds brand authority faster and allows prospects to remain anonymous until they are ready to make contact. Just because gated content produces leads, there is no guarantee of getting qualified leads with the gated content. Ungated content can help improve SEO, attract traffic and position your firm as a thought leader.

Hybrid Approach to Gating Content

For many accounting firms, a hybrid content strategy offers the ideal balance between visibility and lead generation. Rather than gating all premium resources or leaving everything visible, a hybrid approach strategically gates only the most high-value content such as industry specific webinars, tax strategy templates and whitepapers, while more educational content is freely accessible. This allows firms to build credibility and trust through ungated blog posts, insights and videos, while still capturing qualified leads when visitors are ready to engage more deeply. By mapping your content to different stages of the buyer journey, you can ensure that each piece serves a purpose—whether it’s to inform, engage, or convert.

Overall, deciding whether to gate your firm’s content is not a one-size fits all decision. It depends on your firm’s goals, your audiences’ expectations and the value of content that you’re providing. Gating can be a powerful tool for generating leads and identifying high-intent prospects but overusing it can deter potential clients who are still in the awareness stage. A thoughtful, hybrid approach often works best to provide open access to educational content that builds trust, and reserve gated access for premium resources that offer deeper value. By aligning your content strategy with your audience’s journey, your accounting firm can maximize both visibility and conversion.
