Business Development: How Private Equity is Transforming Business Development and Marketing in Public Accounting

The rapid expansion of private equity (PE) investments within the accounting and advisory industry is fundamentally transforming the landscape for business development, marketing and growth professionals. These substantial capital injections often come hand in hand with a significant increase in available resources and heightened expectations for accelerated growth. This dynamic shift translates into intensified pressure on these professionals to deliver results, but it simultaneously opens doors for future career opportunities.
A key consequence of PE’s investment in firms will be a paradigm shift from operating as a loosely connected collection of individualized practices to functioning as a cohesive, organized and sophisticated business operation. It’s crucial to note that this transition does not aim to diminish or undervalue the role of individual practice groups; rather, it emphasizes and underscores the critical importance of enhanced coordination and collaboration across all facets of the organization. This collaborative approach will be particularly pronounced in the back-end operations, encompassing crucial areas such as business development, marketing and growth functions. The result of this shift is likely to be a workforce of professionals who feel increasingly valued, recognized and integral to the firm’s future trajectory and success.
Casting our gaze forward to the next 5-10 years, we can anticipate a landscape populated by accounting and advisory firms that have made substantial and strategic investments in their back-office operations. These investments are likely to manifest in several key areas: significantly expanded headcount to handle increased workloads; the acquisition and retention of exceptional talent to drive innovation and excellence; and the implementation of robust, cutting-edge technology infrastructure. All these efforts will be directed toward supporting a more professionalized and streamlined approach to building and growing increasingly efficient and profitable businesses.
What are the implications of these industry-wide shifts for today’s business development, marketing and growth professionals? The answer can be distilled into one potent word: Change. Historically, the accounting industry has cultivated a reputation for being risk-averse and somewhat resistant to change, often moving at a measured, cautious pace. However, the ground beneath this traditional mindset is shifting dramatically. It’s important to recognize that, while PE investment is undoubtedly accelerating the pace of these changes, it is not the sole driving force behind this industry-wide transformation. Instead, we are witnessing the emergence of an increasingly complex business environment that necessitates business owners and operators to actively seek specialized advice and expert know-how to successfully navigate this environment. And when these businesses require such guidance and expertise, where do they typically turn? The answer, more often than not, is accounting and advisory firms.
For those professionals working within firms that have either directly received PE investment or have been acquired by an organization with prior PE backing, the influx of capital will likely catalyze and accelerate merger and acquisition (M&A) activities. This surge in M&A activity will demand a high degree of adaptability, particularly in understanding and successfully integrating increasingly diverse client bases and an expanded portfolio of service offerings. While these changes may initially seem daunting, professionals who approach this evolving landscape with the right mindset, coupled with thorough preparation and a willingness to learn and adapt, can position themselves to feel not only prepared, but also resilient and confident in the face of these industry-wide transformations.
It’s important to note that while firms receiving PE investment will, in the majority of cases, experience a growth and investment rate that surpasses those of firms choosing to remain independent, this does not mean that BD, marketing and growth professionals at independent firms will be immune to the ripple effects of PE’s growing influence in the industry. On the contrary, over the coming years, professionals at independent firms will likely face increasingly fierce competition in the marketplace, particularly in the ongoing struggle to attract and retain the most desirable clients. This intensifying competitive landscape underscores the critical importance of continuous education and adaptability. Professionals must ensure they remain well-informed about the changes unfolding across the industry and work collaboratively with their firm’s leadership to develop and implement a dynamic, evolving growth strategy. Such a strategy should be designed to ensure the firm remains competitive and attractive in the eyes of both prospective and existing clients, even in the face of well-funded, PE-backed competitors.
