Prepare for the Shift: How Google’s AI Overview will Impact SEO Strategies

By now, you’re probably growing as fatigued as I am of hearing about Artificial Intelligence (AI), the powerful shortcuts it will unlock, or the less savory side effects it may cause. While much of the focus has been on generative AI, such as ChatGPT, Jasper, and others, these are only one facet of the widening umbrella of AI. Every major technology company is trying to figure out how to work AI into their strategy, and few are as well-equipped to do so as Google.

Google has quietly rolled out their AI Overview, a new feature in the tech giant’s ever-evolving search algorithm, that is reshaping how users interact with search results and how businesses strategize their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts. While this breakthrough brings a more streamlined search experience to users, it raises substantial concerns for content creators, publishers, and marketers trying to get visits to their websites.

Understanding Google’s AI Overview

AI Overview is designed to enhance search results by providing summarized answers to queries, pulling information from various sources, and presenting it in a concise, easy-to-read format, all without ever leaving the search engine. Instead of having to click through multiple pages for information, users can now receive a concise, easy-to-read response compiled from various sources right underneath the user’s query.

This feature is designed to enhance local SEO, informational, and transactional searches, among others. It’s also worth noting, there are certain limitations to the types of queries that AI Overview can handle. For instance, it won’t deal with sensitive topics like divisive politics or war, and specific categories like finance, health, and deeply personal queries are also excluded.

How AI Overview Changes Organic Listings

Despite the benefits to users, AI Overview presents a significant challenge for businesses that heavily rely on SEO to drive traffic to their websites. Although still in Beta, early testing has shown that this feature could lead to an 18-64% decrease in organic traffic for some websites, particularly those involving informational queries, where users typically seek quick answers. For instance, users searching for “Tax Filing Requirements” might receive a comprehensive AI-generated summary that negates the need to visit a specific website. This necessitates businesses to closely track their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and metrics to understand this feature’s direct impact on conversions.

Furthermore, with AI Overview, the need for users to click through to individual websites may be reduced, impacting the traditional SEO strategies that businesses have invested heavily in. The shift underscores the need for businesses to adapt their SEO and content strategies swiftly.

On the flip side, AI Overview offers opportunities for increased visibility. Websites featured in AI-generated responses may see a boost in traffic, especially if they weren’t previously highly ranked in traditional organic search. This could lead to businesses gaining a competitive advantage and trust through increased organic impressions.

Adapting Your SEO Practices

The introduction of Google’s AI Overview has led to a shift in how ranking factors are evaluated and prioritized. To prepare for this shift, businesses should optimize their SEO practices, both technical and content.

  1. Keyword Optimization – Traditional SEO practices focused on keyword optimization, backlink quality, and other on-page and off-page factors. However, with the integration of AI, there is a stronger emphasis on content relevance, context, and user intent. AI algorithms prioritize content that answers user queries comprehensively and contextually rather than just matching keywords.
  2. Audit Content Quality – High-quality content that is informative, well-structured, and authoritative is more likely to be featured in AI-generated summaries. Google AI favors content that provides in-depth analysis, clear answers, and trustworthy information.
  3. Test Your User Experience – User experience (UX) is increasingly significant in SEO due to Google AI’s ability to assess how users interact with content. Websites that offer a seamless and engaging experience are more likely to rank higher in search results.
  4. Anticipate Zero-Click Searches – Businesses need to ensure their content is visible and authoritative enough to be featured directly in the search results, as more users are finding the information they need without leaving the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
  5. Revisit your Business Listing – Local businesses should ensure that their Google Business listing is accurately filled out, while e-commerce sites should focus on robust on-page content, including real reviews and detailed product descriptions.

Looking Ahead

Despite initial uncertainties, the arrival of Google’s AI Overview presents an opportunity for businesses to refine their strategies, improve user engagement, and ultimately, thrive in the era of AI-driven search. By staying updated on algorithm changes, focusing on user intent, diversifying content, and adjusting SEO strategies based on emerging trends, businesses can effectively navigate Google’s evolving search algorithm and maintain strong SEO performance. The balance between human-created, machine-generated, and hybrid content will be the key to success in this new era of search engine optimization.
