The Secret to Better Business Development in Accounting Firms is Curiosity

Chris Camara & Sara Dobek discuss Business Development in the Amplify Podcast

Enabling Sales: Tools, Tech & Strategies That Drive Firm Growth

This article recaps season 9 : episode 2 of the Forward Focus Amplify podcast, where host Chris Camara chats with Sarah Dobek, president of Inovautus, who shared that the real driver of effective business development isn’t scripts, proposals or tech – it’s curiosity.

In accounting firms, “sales” can feel like a dirty word. Most partners and professionals don’t see themselves as salespeople, they see themselves as advisors. And rightly so. But as firms focus more on growth, the conversation around sales enablement is becoming more common. During a recent Amplify podcast discussion, Sarah Dobek, president of Inovautus, shared that the real driver of effective business development isn’t scripts, proposals or tech – it’s curiosity.

Sales enablement is often misunderstood as a collection of marketing assets or sales tools. But Dobek frames sales enablement about giving professionals the confidence and tools to communicate their value. And the best way to build those tools is by understanding how clients actually buy. Marketing and BD professionals should spend time:

  • Sitting in on client meetings
  • Listening to prospect calls
  • Observing how partners explain services
  • Asking questions about how decisions are made

Some of the most valuable insights come from simply listening.

“Get in and understand it,” Dobek says. “Be curious about the process.”

Today’s technology can amplify this curiosity. AI meeting notes tools and CRM systems now capture data from client conversations, revealing patterns that were once invisible. Firms can analyze buyer concerns, decision timelines, where opportunities stall, and which conversations lead to wins. This information helps marketing and BD teams build tools that actually support the sales process.

Sales enablement doesn’t always mean sophisticated technology. Sometimes it’s something as simple as a table in a proposal that clearly explains the difference between two services. When professionals can articulate their value clearly, they show up with more confidence which improves client conversations.

Another major benefit of curiosity is alignment. Marketing teams typically speak to the market, while BD teams speak directly to buyers. Sales enablement bridges that gap.  When marketing listens to sales conversations or analyzes client meeting insights, they can create content that reflects real client concerns.

The accounting profession is evolving quickly. Technology, AI, and new business development tools are transforming how firms attract and win clients. The firms that ask better questions, listen more closely, and seek to truly understand their clients will always have the advantage.
